UAEU marks 50 years ranking first across multiple subjects in QS 2026 global rankings
University improves in eight disciplines and expands global academic presence
ABU DHABI – The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has secured top national positions across multiple disciplines in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, coinciding with its 50th anniversary milestone.
The rankings, released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, highlight the institution’s growing global academic standing and research influence.
In this year’s edition, UAEU is ranked among the world’s leading universities in 21 subjects, reflecting a steady expansion of its academic footprint. The 2026 rankings assessed more than 18,300 academic programmes across over 1,700 universities in 100 locations, spanning 55 disciplines and five broad faculty areas.
Global standing
UAEU recorded ranking improvements in eight subjects, underlining continued progress across its academic portfolio. The university also maintained representation in all five broad subject areas for the fourth consecutive year, with four of these areas showing improved positions globally.
In terms of global subject groupings, Engineering and Technology ranked 216, followed by Social Sciences and Management at 272. Natural Sciences placed at 303, while Life Sciences and Medicine stood at 310. Arts and Humanities completed the list at 391.
These results reflect a consistent upward trajectory in international benchmarks, particularly in research output and academic recognition.
National lead
At the national level, UAEU ranked 1st in the UAE in Life Sciences and Medicine as well as Social Sciences and Management. It also secured second position in Engineering and Technology and Natural Sciences, reinforcing its position among the country’s leading higher education institutions.
At a more detailed subject level, UAEU ranked 1st in the UAE in seven individual disciplines and shared the top spot in three others. The university also placed among the top 200 globally in four subjects, highlighting its growing influence in specialised academic fields.
Across the UAE, a total of 96 programmes from 14 institutions were ranked, reflecting the overall strength and competitiveness of the country’s higher education sector.
Ranking metrics
The QS subject rankings are based on five key performance indicators, including academic reputation and employer reputation, drawn from over 200,000 global survey responses. Research impact is measured through citations per paper and the H-index, while the International Research Network indicator evaluates global research collaboration.
According to Prof Ahmed Ali Alraeesi, Vice Chancellor of UAEU, the results align with the institution’s long-term academic and research ambitions. He noted that the rankings reflect sustained efforts in advancing education quality, research output and international engagement.
